1. Zeppelin- Count Ferdinand Zeppelin was in the Prussian and Union army during the civil war. He was the first large scale builder of the zeppelin which became its name due to him. In 1900 the first successful flight happened, and by 1908 Zeppelin’s were making routine passenger and mail carries across Germany. It was inevitable abandoned after inconvenience and safety of the balloons had problems.
2. X-Ray- Discovered in 1895 by Wilhelm Rontgen, a German physicist who used this radiation to photograph objects hidden behind opaque shields. X-Rays were eventually used in medicine being able to see the skeletal system, and saving millions of lives. He was later awarded the Nobel prize in 1895 for his discovery.
3. Toothpaste- The things responsible for cleaning and strengthening teeth was invented by Ottomar Mayenburg. In 1907, he experimented with multiple things including tooth powder, mouth wash, and ethereal oils. He then created a toothpaste called Chlorodont. He added a little peppermint for flavor and then put it into tubes and started selling. People used rough things like egg shells before tooth paste was invented.
4. Television- In 1931 the first electronic television system was invented by a 24-year-old German named Baron Ardenne. He presented it at the Berlin Radio Exhibition, and in 1935 the first regular television show was broadcasted and now 118.4 million televisions in the U.S. alone.
5. Telephone- Johan Reis, a science teacher from Germany, he developed the first functioning phone in 1860 which he called das phone. The Reis telephone was not practical enough for commercial use, it could transmit sound, but it was hard to hear the words. That is the reason why Alexander Bell is credited with making the telephone.
6. Refrigerator- Carl Linde is credited with making the first reliable and efficient ammonia refrigerator in 1876. The company he created to sell his product was an international success. Refrigerators replaced ice in food handling and was soon used in industrial processes.
7. Mayonnaise- It was originally invented in France in 1765, but German immigrant Richard Hellmann sold the first ready-made mayonnaise at his deli. He started selling the Mayonnaise is large glass jars, and founded the Hellman’s Blue-Ribbon Mayonnaise which is still around today.
8. Jet Engine- Physicist Hans Ohain was one of the first inventors of the jet propulsion engine. He created the first self-propelled engine to run and the first to power an all jet craft. None of his designs made it to production, but without his contribution the jet engine wouldn’t be around today.
9. Jeans- Levi Straus was a trained tailor from Bavaria before he left to join the California Gold Rush. He found his problem when he ran into prospectors that complained about their pants tearing from the mud. In 1893, Straus patented his idea of using rivets at the stress point of sturdy work pants. This led to the invention of Levi jeans which were first known for being for rebels, but now are one of the leading fashion trends.
10. Helicopter- The helicopter was invented by engineer Heinrich Focke in the 1930’s. He did research on the control of rotary winged flight and built a small scale in 1932. 4 years later he demonstrated the first full human carrying helicopter in Berlin.
